| Description | The earliest plan for the City of Georgetown was laid out in 1729, under the direction of Elisha Screven with William Swinton, surveyor. In the plan, the city limits were the Sampit River on the South Common (or Cannon) Street on the east; Church Street, with lots given to the churches on the north; and Wood Street on the west. There was a dispute over the land between Elisha Screven and Mary Perry Cleland, which was settled in the latter's favor. Mrs. Cleland then added another block of lots, on the east, to St. James Street and another, on the west, to Cleland Street. This picture is of the map of 1737 which shows these additions and is the earliest map extant. Georgetown is little changed from the original plan as the street names and lot numbers are still the same used in all deeds and transactions. |
