Georgetown's four volunteer fire companies are drawn up on the north side of the 700 block of Front St. for their annual inspection and competition. The band is ready to strike up and the spectators are literally coming out of the walls and over the fences. A newspaper clipping from one of W. D. Morgan's scrapbooks dated 1888 tells of the 17th annual parade of the fire departments. There were four companies organized: two white, The Salamander Hook & Ladder Co. and The Winyah Steam Fire Co.; two colored, The Heston Fire Engine Co. and The Star Fire Engine Co. Each had its own fire engine and fire engine house located in various parts of the town to give good protection. The Commercial Hotel is the large building with the 3 dormer windows. None of the buildings seen in the photo remain. (O.B.Rosenger, Photographer)

The annual celebration of Confederate Memorial Day was a highlight of activities in Georgetown for many years. One news account relates that all ships in the harbor displayed bunting and flags on Memorial Day and at 9 A.M. all church bells tolled. At 4 P.M. citizens gathered at the Winyah Indigo Society Hall for songs and speeches. Then a procession that included the Georgetown Rifle Guards, Marion's Men of Winyah, school children, the U.D.C. and other citizens formed and marched to this Confederate momument at the corner of Broad and Highmarket Sts., where another ceremony was held.

In the shadow of the Town Clock (not Rice Museum) the fire companies lined up for the annual parade and inspection. (See photo 01-021-M) The brick building still stands on the corner and is now used for offices. In this bygone time, it was an ice cream parlor, probably a favorite with young and old alike. All of the other buildings on the north side of the 600 block of Front St. have been razed. (Salamander Fire Dept.)

Georgetown, Dec. 4, 1898---- One of the most beautiful wedding ceremonies that has taken place in this city for a long time was solemnized last Thursday afternoon at the Episcopal Church of Prince George, Winyah, the contracting parties being one of Georgetown's loveliest daughters, Miss Mary Laval Bailey, and Mr. J. Frederick McLure of Union. The bride entered the church leaning on The arm of her father, Dr. Thos. P. Bailey, the organ pealing forth the beautiful strains of the wedding march from 'Lohengrin' under the touch of Miss Ruth A. Hazard. Approaching the altar they were met by the groom, with his best man, who came from the vestry room. Following the bride came the bridesmaids and groomsmen in the following order; Miss Maria Bailey, the maid of honor, with the best man, Mr. Robert G. Mills of Chester, Miss Alice Laval, of Columbia, with Mr. Hugh Fraser; Miss Lalla Stokes, with Mr. J. C. Tampletti Miss Eva Waller, with Mr. G. A. Wright of Union; Miss Luch L. Warley of

It probably was just that! The four fire companies of the city competed annually in several events after a parade and inspection. The main evant was to see which company could run 100 yards and plug in, then get water from the hydrant the fastest. This was timed to the one-hundredth of a second. In 1901, the Winyah Steam Fire Co. took 1st place in this event in the state competitions held in Union. The entire town turned out for the fun, which was followed by an evening of celebration and/or consolation at the respective fire houses. Bleachers are visible just to the right of the clock tower and many risked life and limb perched atop store roofs and on light poles to cheer their favorites to the finish line.
