Subject
South Carolina, Georgetown County
Lumbering
Description
This
is
a
back
view
of the
ACL
office
building
.
Directly
in
front
ran
Fraser
Street
,
presently
referred
to as
S
.
Fraser
Street
.
Across
the
street
a
row
of
houses
that the
company
built
for its
workers
is
seen
. The
ACL
was a
giant
corporation
in its
time
.
When
it
came
to
Georgetown
around
1900
,
it
created
"
New
Town
"
which
was the
mill
and
all
the
houses
for
workers
of
Fraser
Street
.
Numerous
rows
of
houses
were
built
.
All
of the
houses
on a
row
were
alike
, but the
rows
were
different
. There were
single
family
dwellings
,
such
as these
pictured
with a
fenced-in
yard
; there were
many
duplexes
;
some
one-story
units
and
some
two-story
single
family
houses
smaller
than these
seen
and with
less
yard
. The
executives
had
very
large
single
accomodations
on
Winyah
Road
.
Although
many
of these
places
have been
torn
down
, there are
still
examples
of
each
type
in
existence
.
