Description
Newly landscaped terraces and walkways were photographed by North Carolina photographer , Bayard Wootten in 1938 . Loutrel Briggs , a native of New York , established an office in Charleston in 1929 and worked for 40 years in the Charleston area . He planted gardens for the William Gibbes house , Mulberry Plantation , Mepkin Plantation , Emily Whaley's Garden at 58 Church Street . Duncan Waddell hired Briggs to come to Chicora Wood to enhance the natural beauty of the plantation and Briggs planted numerous azaleas and camellias throughout the area . He often encouraged the use of native plants in lowcountry gardens . The Pee Dee river flows in the background .
