Ono of tho mast sensational nnil in¬ teresting divorco suits over enacted on the legal stage in this conntry will, at nn early ilay, engage tho astute anil shining lllaokatoiio talent of Baltimore. The romantio details of this peculiar life drama will certainly eanso the gns- sijis.not only ol this particular locality, but of the entire United States, to wag their respoclivo tongues with great ve¬ locity, ami to roll their individual eyes wilh earnest amusement. The story mails like a romance, Int' evory word is as true as gold.
Five years ago among the "young Woods"'ol Baltimore there was num¬ bered a young gentleman who, hy n happy combination of art and nature, was entitled to a high scat in the arena of life, ¦ He wns youthful, twenty-three years of age, handsome in the faco and stately and dignified iu form. He was the happy possessor of $100,000, safe¬ ly invested ill registered -United States bonds, bequeathed to bim by an aged grandmother, 'fho young man had a vory aristocrat io and wealthy mother, and she was extremely particular in reference to hor son's choice ot a do¬ mestio puitner for lifo. _ On a bright, frosty morning-ill tha Pmonth of Jauuary, 1877, tlio young man entered a fashionablo kid glove establishment on Lexington street, this oity, for tho pnrposo of purchasing a No, 7 lady's kid glovo, wliioh wns iho si.o thnt snugly incased his small ami finoly-lormeil hand. Thoro, to com¬ press nn individual world into a few words, ho mot his destiny. The youug saleslnduy who wailed on him was a beautiful brunette, with a most engag¬ ing mien,' It was the old and yet ov¬ er nuw story. Whon he announced to his mothor ho was going to marry this , yonng lady there was a total annihilation of the do- tnostio pence iu that Madison-avenue mansion. - As may bo imagined; the mafriiigo caused a sciious disruption of family ties; but aa the youug lady be-
iiioriiing when his cooing babe, now aged nearly two yeais, sat on his ma¬ ternal grandmother's knee, u colored servant brought her a Idler, fresh from the hand of tho wiry man in modest gray. Sho npci\ed it with a smile of peace, read with a gasp of horror, ond then, with one wild shriek of woe, sho and the infant simultaneously fell to tlie floor. The lettor, written in almost an illegible hand and filled with nn abundant amount of phone!ie spelling, contained tho following startling words'.
"Yonr son's wife is a nigger. He married'a nigger. I nm her grand¬ mother, and 1 um what they call a mulatto. Yoii would think she is whito, like you white folks, hut sho ain't. Ifyou don't believe me. come -tee nip. ' I scud my address."
A iiiaino, number and thc name of a street wero at the bottom of this dyna¬ mite handgrcnadc. Of conrso when the old lady recovered from her swoon she refused lo believe that the note contained the truth. However, when the hnsband heard of the contents, he immediately began a strict investiga¬ tion, and when (he facts iu the case becamo so convincing that .the wife could deny no longer, bis young bin nctle treasure, with tears of anguish in her beautifnl dark eyes, confessed, in her husbands anus, that colored blood did run in her veins.
It seems that lhe old mulatto wo¬ man gnmbler whs his wilo's grand¬ mother. His wile's grandfather was a white man, and her parents were white, her mother having been more success¬ ful at deception in this line with her husband than tbo young wile had been with her young broker husband. The beautiful, brunette wifo then certainly had a very slight negro element in her physical makeup. It appears that the _ Id colorod grandmothe. had foryears obtained "hush money" lrom the yonng wife, whieh she spent on her ruling passiuu—gtimbliug. The old mulatto was the woman who had. sp.___lW«ed

haved so well under the circumstances, alio was so pretty aud bewitching and kind in manner to hor mother-in-law, that oldtho lady at last relented.
Two years lator the young couple wero happily keeping house in a luxur¬ ious mannor, and tho joyous prospec¬ tive father was well known ns a shrewd aiid energetic broker. At this period of tho young husband's existence lie discovered that his wife' was using large amounts of moiioy in a very mysterious manner, Ho began to expostulate with her, "Dour," he kindly said, "I am wealthy, I know, but I can not stand theso mysterious and heavy drafts. What do you do or want with all this money?" Sho returned confused and evasive replies, and the young husband waa much perplexed hy his wife's pe¬ culiar behavior. ?
. About this time' the proprietors and patrons nf the "bucket shops" and low gambling resorts of this city were great¬ ly, amazed by tho behavior and display ot wealth whioh aii aged colored wom¬ an delighted thom with. Bhe was a very light mulatto, about the exact shade, aa far aa comploxion went, of an ordinary cream puff, with a couple of table-spoonfuls of ginger in its make, up,- She was a most inordinate gam¬ bler, seemed to he completely carried away by the passion of chance, and, whilo a constant and hoavy loser, was nover sliort for over a oouplo of hours at a tune. She actually appeared to own a gold mino. Where she got her money no oiur knew, and ahe never told, bnt ihe.had it, and that was all tliat. was necessary for the particular busiueis she .was engaged in.
Ono day the young broker found himself the proud father of a red-haired, dimpled boy. Ho then did not find so muoh fault with his wife for what he considered her oxtruv'agant and mcles

the frequenters'of tho low gambling hulls of this city, When the youug n-ifo refused to give tho old' woman money sho would threaten to _ writo or tell lho secret to the aristocratic moth¬ er-in-law. ¦ '
At last the wife, tired out and cdiri- ph-tcly disheartened by the-frequent demands on her pnrso by tho old fe¬ male gambler, absonlctly ¦ refused to givo her any more, substantial wealth, never even .dreaming for tt moment that at that late day the old woman would carry her vile threat info execu¬ tion. But, in ah evil hour, the; ohl fe¬ male gambler did so, with the dire re¬ mit' stntod. As tho young wifo refu¬ ses lo givo up her husband, and as her attorney, ono of the leading lawyers of this city, declares that under tho pecu¬ liar circumstances of the case the mar¬ riage is legal, it is stated that tho young broker, goaded; on by his indignant mother, will institute a suit for divorce nt nil early day. In appearance the nnhappy wife resembles thn average pretty 'American brunette, and no "nn0 not conversant with-the facts as. hero given would supposo, ovon for a' mo¬ ment, that she had a slight mixture of colored blood in her veins. • ?•

When the resolutions: ot respect to fo the memory of the late Crongress- man R. M. A. Hawk, Illinois, came up, Senator Hampton delivered a brief but touching eulogy upou the deceased, whom ho hud met in battle. Senator Hampton, speaking of Mr. Hawk, said:
"The two earliest meetings between Maj. Hawk and myself were under pe¬ culiar circumstances. We met first amid the roar of battle, and neither of ns knew the other. Years afterward, when he was placed in the othor house, a fitting and honored representative of the State of Illinois, I was sent to rep¬ resent tho Stato ot South Carolina in this Chamber, and coming here crip pled as he was, in walking up these steps one day I mot him, not knowing him, a man of coinmandiug. presence and of line faco, and drawn to him by tho common sympathy of a common affliction, I ventured to speak to him. Wo fell into conversation, und after a few moments he said to mo without one feeling of resentment, tnd with a kind smile ou his manly face, 'I lost iny leg.in an attaok that Gen. Hap¬ ten made upon our camp.' That was anolher bond of sympathy between ns. * * * I feel assured that the hnin- blo flower that I shall venture to lay upon his tomb will not to valuod less bocauso it comes from one who had been his foo, but who now mourns him as a frieuil."
